This is the first of what I hope will be many letters to the membership of The Palm Beach Gardens Loyal Order Of Moose. It is my intention to accomplish several things by keeping the lines of communication open between myself and the general membership. i.e.: inform the members of the boards intentions concerning certain projects. Also, convey my intentions for lodge and quality of environment improvement. A side benefit could be a reduction in fodder for the rumor mill.
First I would like to thank the members for their expression of faith in me by voting for me as administrator. I would also be remiss if I did not mention that the encouragement and assistance I received during my tenure as acting administrator is much appreciated.
You may or may not have heard that our Governor and the Board of Officers are looking at the feasibility of remodeling the game room and making it the only room where smoking will be allowed. We are looking into air systems that would remove the smoke and not allow the smell of it to escape the room. We hope to make it a comfortable place for both smokers and non-smokers. Stay tuned for updates.
Moose Internationals campaign slogan this year is, "Back To Basics". Having just returned from the international convention I can tell you that back to basics means a lot of things, but one of the most important is that M.I. wants its affiliated lodges to return to the basic values that have always been part of The Moose Family Fraternity. With that in mind, it is my intention to begin enforcing some of the bylaws that have sort of fallen by the wayside. The first is as follows in the bylaws (posted in the lodge) section 48.2, "Vulgar, profane and indecent conduct or language is absolutely prohibited at any time in the social quarters, lodge home, on lodge property, or during a Moose sponsored activity". Now, I know this will be difficult for some of you, so we will take it slowly. I am also aware that some would like to see the "umbrella" put back up, but that just allows people to pay to curse all they want. The word which has been pointed out to me most often as being offensive is naturally the "F" word. Beginning with the release of this communication it is my intention with the help of the officers and bartenders to begin giving verbal warnings to any member who uses this word and is overheard by one of the aforementioned. After two warnings, and upon the third offense the offending member will be brought before the House Committee for determination of suspension from the social quarters.
Another thought gleaned from the national convention comes from a phrase I have heard a few times around several lodges; "The Moose is all about the money." Well, the truth is the members that have made that statement are correct. More importantly though is what is done with that money. Sure, a good portion of the money our lodge brings in goes to the upkeep of the lodge and the running of the business, but without the lodge we would not be able to support Moose Charities which keeps Mooseheart (The Child City) and Moosehaven (Retirement Community) running. Therefore, I will not apologize for myself or the Loyal Order Of Moose for appearing to be "All about the money". I am proud to be generating as much profit as possible in order to help orphans and old folks, and you should be proud to give of your time and money for such a worthy cause! To paraphrase President John F. Kennedy, "Ask not what your Moose Lodge can do for you. Ask what you can do for your Moose Lodge".
Well, that's it for now. Thanks for reading and helping the cause!
